In 2016 I (Dan) married my wife Michaela. I was in the Marine Corps living in North Carolina at the time, and she was home in Cleveland. A buddy of mine, Tucker, helped us load up our belongings in a U-Haul and was planning to drive it down for us. Throughout the process, Tucker would not stop talking about how much he loved moving. He told us about every move he had ever made, all of the times he helped his friends move, and how proud he is that people always asked him for help moving. Jokingly, I said, “Tucker, why don’t you just start a moving company when your get out of the Marines?”
Lightbulb! I realized right there that I knew what I would do when I was out of the Corps. All I needed was some blankets, straps, dollies, a truck, and someone to help me move.
In 2018, a few months before it was time for me to come back home, I started learning everything I could about the business. I called other moving companies pretending to be a customer to get an idea of their pricing and how they would prepare for the move logistically. I watched YouTube videos about packing trucks and read just about every moving tip on the internet.
In August 2018, Harrington Moving LLC was born and moving right away. We were very fortunate to have friends and family who let us move their homes, or trusted us enough personally to recommend our services to people they know. Being a new business, having no reviews, and quite literally no experience, it was tough to acquire customers. We did about 10 moves from August to October and eventually we ran out of friends and relatives that were moving.
I was attending school at Cleveland State University, while also trying to figure out how to run a business. That November, after a couple weeks of no moves, I decided to start looking for jobs. I figured once I graduated college I would possibly try the moving business again. I interviewed for several jobs to work in offices at law firms, investment firms, banks, etc… and thankfully, in hindsight, I did not get any of them.
Come January 2019, sitting in my 8 PM accounting class at CSU, I realized how much I hated school, it was why I dropped out and joined the Marine Corps in the first place. When our professor told us to take a break and be back in five minutes, I walked out the door and never went back.
I went home that night and figured out everything I needed to do to start acquiring customers. It turns out that if you put the slightest bit of effort into things, they work out.
That February we started moving full-time and have been since. In 2019 we did over 300 moves. In 2020, we were able to hire a few more guys and did over 500.
Now present day 2021, we have taken a big step in our business. We are taking the model we have found to be successful and we are bringing it to Columbus, Cincinnati, Dallas, Austin, and Houston. We are so excited for what the future holds in our business, and so thankful for all of the customers who have trusted us to move them into their new home.
