What Happens If Your Closing Is Delayed on Moving Day?

You’ve booked the movers, packed the house, and planned your move. Then you find out you won’t get the keys to your new home when you expected.

At Harrington Moving, we know that moving schedules sometimes change. The best way to handle a closing or possession delay is to communicate early, understand the available options, and work together on a plan.

A recent three-truck move from Olmsted Falls to Valley City is a good example of how those adjustments can work.

Confirm When You Can Actually Get Your Keys

Before scheduling your move, discuss both the expected day and the time you can access your new home with your realtor. Make clear whether that timing is confirmed or still uncertain.

There is often a gap between booking movers and receiving the keys. Keep your moving company updated as those details become clearer.

If you schedule a Friday move while possession is still uncertain, consider what your backup plan would be if access slips until Monday.

The time of day matters, too. If the crew finishes loading your belongings at noon but you cannot get into the new house until late afternoon, that can leave several hours between loading and unloading.

Depending on your moving agreement, waiting time may add to your bill. It can also extend the crew’s workday and affect other scheduled commitments. Discussing the timing beforehand gives everyone a better chance to plan around it.

How We Adjusted a Three-Truck Move

On a recent move, our customers learned they wouldn’t get their keys until 7 p.m., which didn’t leave us enough time to unload them that day.

This was a three-truck move from Olmsted Falls to Valley City. We arranged to keep their belongings on the trucks overnight and unload Friday.

Making that adjustment involved more than moving an appointment on the calendar. We rented an additional truck for another Friday job and contacted two other customers about their flexibility. With their agreement, one start time moved an hour earlier and another moved an hour later.

That coordination allowed us to arrange the Friday unloading while keeping our other customers’ moves on the schedule.

Keep Your Overnight Essentials With You

If your belongings will remain on a truck overnight, pack separately for the time between homes.

Keep these items with you:

  • Toiletries and personal hygiene supplies.
  • Clothes and shoes for the following day.
  • Medications and important documents.
  • Pillows, blankets, or other items you need to sleep comfortably.
  • Phones, computers, chargers, and anything needed for work.
  • Everyday essentials for children and other family members.

Set those bags aside somewhere clearly designated before loading begins, and tell the crew they are staying with you.

Once a box is several rows deep in a loaded truck, retrieving it may not be practical until unloading. Think through what you’ll need before the truck is packed.

Planned Overnight Holding Is Easier to Arrange

If you already know there will be a gap between leaving one home and entering the next, tell us when requesting your estimate.

We can discuss truck availability, plan the loading and unloading dates, and account for the expected nights on the truck in your estimate.

If the delay is unexpected, contact us as soon as you learn about it. We’ll review the schedule, explain the available options and any additional costs, and work with you on the next steps.

Overnight holding and revised delivery times depend on the circumstances and availability.

Flexibility Takes Cooperation

We want to make your move as convenient as possible. We also have other families relying on appointments that may have been booked weeks in advance.

When plans change, our goal is to help you while honoring those commitments. That may mean checking another customer’s timing flexibility, arranging an additional truck, or finding the next workable unloading window.

We want your belongings delivered and our trucks available for their next moves, too. Your patience, early communication, and understanding help us find a solution that works for everyone involved.
