A Recent Westlake Move: Downsizing Without Leaving Everything Behind

Our crew recently helped a customer downsize for retirement, moving within Westlake from a 3,500-square-foot house to a 1,750-square-foot townhome.

Moving into half the space brings some challenges—especially when large furniture is making the trip, too.

Protecting a heavy armoire for tight stairways

One of this move’s toughest pieces was a heavy armoire. Its substantial doors made the weight uneven, and the route out included a tight staircase and doorway. We protected it with moving pads and shrink wrap, then worked together as a four-person crew to maneuver it out. At the townhome, overhead light fixtures also had to be temporarily removed to provide enough clearance on the stairs.

Making room for a vintage jukebox

The move included a vintage jukebox, too. Gage and Jay used shoulder straps to help carry the heavy piece through the tight access.

Our advice for anyone downsizing

Measure more than the room where your furniture will go. Check doorways, stair turns, ceiling clearance, and the entire path into the home. Let your movers know about oversized or unusually heavy pieces beforehand so they can plan the crew, equipment, and protection.

A smaller home can still have room for the pieces you love—but getting them there takes planning.
